Another celebrating of the work of friend and mentor, Merl Saunders, and his work with Tom Fogerty, John Kahn, Bill Vitt, Jerry Garcia, and the Hawkins Family. This was another co-write with Pam Carrier and Merl Saunders.

Merl Saunders Jr suggested I cover this. I went back and listened to it and went, "Oh crap, how am I going to pull this off with my go-to-drummer being in England?" I was also concerned about the arrangement, and transposing, so I turned to the best guy I know for that, my longtime friend and producer of Ticket to Fly, Fred Bogert, who helped me make sense of the thing and added a guitar track.

I sent the original to Joe, and he said his jazz college mate Jeff Marley and he could chart it out and play it for me, oh, and in a key I could sing it in, because I'm not Edwin Hawkins. I had Scott Guberman do the organ and clav parts, and played guitar on it. This was one of the first tracks with Denise Stewart Bates on backing vocals. I asked her is she had some Hawkins Family in her, and she said, "oh yeah." And here we are.
