To Stay Today

about

Keaggy and I were listening to some tunes in his studio, and both being Beatle freaks, they came up. He pulled out a Hofner Bass, a spare one he had, and mentioned he might want to part with it. That was all I needed to hear, and it went home with me. I wrote this the next day.

You can't help but play these kind of songs on a Beatle bass. I wrote the song, played acoustic guitar, bass, some rudimentary piano parts, and some mellotron flutes to a bad drum track, which I sent to Joe and he knew what to do. I mean, the guy plays Ringo in a Beatlemania UK show, and is a freak for sixties recording styles. All I had to say was, "tea towels on this one." Joe and I both love The Rultles as well, so there was a little "Easter egg" waiting for him in the bridge from "Cheese and Onions" which is kind of where the inspiration for part of the chord structure came from.

This was also a "Tyra" song for backing vocals, her arrangements and feel are always so good. Finally off to Phil for his best George Harrison parts across three tracks. It is one of my favorite songs on the album. I think this all came together in about a week or so.

lyrics

Maybe you want some time away
I may need a holiday
where this cloud ain’t hanging over mew

I’m not sure where I can go
Do you even want to know
Could we ever live in harmony

I’m still feeling out of touch
Maybe you don’t know that much
Is there nothing left to talk about

In another place and time
Maybe you would ease my mind
Seems right now that you just wanna shout

No, I don’t wanna feel this way so hard for me to stay today

You might need to let me know if you want for me to go
It's so hard for me to sort it all

Be my lover, be my friend
I don’t want for this to end
Please don’t push me
Please don’t let me fall

Are you feeling this way too
Is there nothing left to do
Can we think it over anymore?

There’s no point in spinning wheels
I don’t like the way it feels
Think about me when you walk the floor

No, I don’t wanna feel this way so hard for me to stay today

Take a picture of my heart
It’s the first place you should start
If you want to go another route

No one comes to our defense
You and me we should make sense
Do I really have to spell it out

No, I don’t wanna feel this way so hard for me to stay today

I feel like I want to die
Didn’t mean to make you cry
Seems there’s nothing right that I can do

Now you’re standing by the door
You don’t want me anymore
I have covered up the light in you

Is there nothing that we share?
Do I really even care?
Maybe I’m afraid of being free?

Do I give or do I take?
Is this how my heart will break?
Will you keep a little part of me?
No, I don’t wanna feel this way so hard for me to stay today
